Wake Up Call
Summer has come and gone to fall
As we sit, window-faced to a sky burnt ochre;
The leaves turn grey to plaster the wall
As the heat, once a friend, becomes a stoker
Of fires burned and worlds turned;
Look at what has become of us now?
To those of us who warned and tried, you spurned
And broke your anger against walls once proud.
Look at us now, for we are abreast of the same change -
Chess pieces on a board we, ourselves, have made.
But look at us now, strategising to fight the strange
Hoping this hell of a world can be unmade...
And as the sky darkens, from a fall to winter freeze,
Wake Up Call
A Villanelle for April 3, 2021
The tick of time heightens nerves. Cease the fall-
Soothe a child's new dawn, cue a mother's hum.
Life's ground levels out with this wake up call.
Teen angst and ire exhaust home's calm. Lift pall
With dad's guitar. Pluck, note by note, then strum.
The tick of time heightens nerves. Cease the fall
As hope and dreams explode like urban sprawl,
New adults hit snooze, then hide. Overcome!
Life's ground levels out with this wake up call.
Bliss and blur of parenthood buries thrall,
Imprint sweet joy from babes soft coo, heart's thrum.
The tick of time heightens nerves. Cease the fall
When sleep shuns fatigue and health cries. Forestall
Sure is!
April 3rd – Wake-up Call
Deep in sleep embraced in dreams
Another world opens up to you
Is this the truth? So real, it seems
Perhaps life of past or future view?
Deep in thought the day goes by
Idly wasting moments of time
At day’s end to question why
Unproductive – an uphill climb
Deep in grief we hit a block
Cannot believe because you’re gone
We can’t stop time or turn back clock
Make peace and realize must go on
Asleep in dreams; deep in thought
Whiling away hours, days and all
Accept. Move on. Action sought.
LIVE your life – it’s your wake-up call.

Wake-up Call
Sunk in the abyss
Pill bottle in hand, researched
But then, the doorbell.
