A BIT ABOUT US

"Supporting writers.. any age, any stage of their writing career." - WFSC

Our mandate is simple: provide support for writers, any age, any stage of their writing career. This simple but focused directive keeps the WFSC on track every year allowing the group to contribute back to the community whenever possible. Membership fees go toward the group's operating and administration costs, which includes maintaining our popular WFSC web site. Fundraising efforts organized by volunteers from the WFSC and sponsorship and/or grant monies are invested in programs and services open to not only our members but the community at large. The WFSC proudly supports young writers by referring them to workshops and camps geared toward young writers. It is our intent to continue to encourage and support young writers with an eye to the future sustainability of the WFSC - today's young writers are our leaders.

WHO WE ARE

Arts, Culture and Literacy

The Writers Foundation of Strathcona County (WFSC) was incorporated in March 2005 and over the years has introduced new and improved ways to connect with our local, and not so local, writing community. The WFSC originally offered Fall Workshops and the Writer's Series Workshops held in the late winter / early spring. Combining those efforts to produce a full day of writing fun was well received and the annual writers conference was born. Our first, in 2010, celebrated our 5-year milestone and in 2023 we celebrate our 18-year anniversary with a return to in-person events! The conference is a great way to network and provide information to the writer through our connections to local and distant authors, our partnerships with other organizations, and our relationship with presenters and community sponsors - and, of course, it provides literary value to our members and the public, in general.

In 2011, the WFSC was presented with the Pride of Strathcona Award in celebration of our contributions to the community in the category of Arts, Culture & Heritage. As we grow and take on new initiatives, hone our skills, and attract new members from near and far, we are as just as committed to the local community and the literary cause. Over the past ten years, the WFSC focused its efforts on gaining public exposure while continuing to support its own members and community writers. Registered as a non-profit society in the Province of Alberta, the elected volunteer Board of Directors manages the business of writing within the guidelines of its by-laws, policies, and procedures.

The WFSC is limited only by the level of its volunteer commitment: as we grow so will opportunities for our groups, our members, and the community. We continue to hone our craft, encourage new members, promote cultural and creative diversity.

Over the years, the WFSC developed partnerships with other community organizations and respects the place we hold within our community. The Strathcona County Library, the Arts and Culture Council of Strathcona County, the Strathcona County Museum & Archives, and Strathcona County Recreation Parks and Culture, Family & Community Services, CALLS, Small Business & Tourism -  all support and promote a vibrant arts & culture community... a community of which we are proud to be a part.
