SWP Prompt - Slide
There used to be laughter
A chattering of delight
Warm hands on cold metal
Climbing to my topmost height
A manicured lawn
Blooming flowers adored
Games played all around
Balls kicked; goals scored
Rain ran in rivulets
Washing my metal clean
To sparkle again in sunlight
Surrounded by lush green
Time passes, my slide ignored
Children grow and tire
Of the simple joys
Finding new games to acquire
Discarded to the far reaches
Left to lie alone
Forgotten and rusting
My shine overgrown
A sapling pushes
Tearing through the rust
Growing toward the light
My smooth metal bust
The woodland encroaches
Mosses clamber in damp soil
Soft cushions of green
Ever increasing to spoil
Metal shine…
The park was closing.
It was time to move on.
The children borrowed a saw.
And grabbed a sapling by the lawn.
They all took turns creating a hole.
The youngest played, hands covered in soil.
Hours later, they reached their goal.
The future was certain! Thanks to their toil!
