April 16th – Night and Day
That fine glowing line on the horizon
Breaks day from night as morning
Spills into dawn.
Subtle at first then bursts into invitation
To awaken a new day
Separated from another night.
Shadows of the night become day’s shade
Where we seek cool comfort from
The heat of the afternoon.
Long silhouettes lay flat, shifting, shortening,
Widening, then merging
With one next as day grows slight
And welcomes sun down.
That indigo line merging day and night
Seems to fuse the two in a final kiss
Before fading into sweet dreams at last light.

DAY 16-NIGHT AND DAY
The sand on Waipu’ilani Beach surrenders to your
Touch, hugging another curvilinear shape in repose.
The 6:05pm HST setting sun is a thumb width away from
The line of the horizon, clear of photo encumbrances save the
Translucent outline of three jolly clouds, waiting to embrace
Their leader for a job well done. Your gaze is as steady as the incoming
Tide, flush with languid ripples, gathering in a foamy reunion at the shoreline
Ten feet from your toes. You lift an adult sippy cup to the salt air and
Toast Wednesday in paradise and drink, quench. The fiery orb
Tucks below the shadow of the Pacific. A conch moans goodbye to
The day. You stand,…
Night and Day
Black as pitch; dotted by lights
Nocturnal creatures explore;
Day begins to soar
Warm sun killing the night
Barking at strangers passing by
Anxious to go for a run;
Lying out in the sun
Playing with yarn is the life
Plants in bloom
Skin browned like toast;
Snow falls coast to coast
Icy roads imposing doom
Corona begins, changes our lives
World comes to a standstill;
Pandemic runs rampant still
Hope comes as vaccine arrives
Much is the same
But 2020 and 2021 are like night and day
